THE DOMAINE DU CLOS DE LA BIERLE...

A story as captivating as a legend

The Domaine du Clos de la Bierle is situated in the township of Poncin, the birth place of the man who paved the way to modern medicine: Bichat, an extraordinary personality in the medical world. Marie François Xavier was born in Thoirette on 14th September 1771 at his grandparents’ home where the domain was mainly devoted to vines. Poncin and its soil probably had a strong influence over the character of this great scientist. It’s easy to imagine the young man who was already interested in natural sciences picking the grapes with the other grape-pickers.
The specific qualities of the Clos de la Bierle were first acknowledged around 1890.
The owners, who were men of science and doctors, created a drink that was light and fruity using fermented grapes which were said to work wonders for anxiety and morbid thoughts.
There was no heir to the magnificent Domain so it became the property of the state and the recipe disappeared into thin air.

Only certain people continued to take loving care of this unexploited vineyard anonymously.

“In 1984, I, Thierry Troccon, a young vintner, was able to buy the domain. During the first restoration work on the ruins, a faulty manoeuvre caused a wall to crumble and exposed a small vault where the discovery of letters and books, hand-written by the aforementioned famous doctors, changed my destiny.”
The knowledge gleaned from these documents and continuous work gave rise to a method and a follow up which have given our wine that little something different and magic.
Rewarded over and over again with Silver and Gold medals since 1999 in Paris, Mâcon, Brussels, Cannes, Sept Caps and the Hachette guide.
